What to Look for in a Great Running Bra: Part 1

Yesterday’s running bra roundup is a good general starting point, but it doesn’t encompass all of our fabulous running bras – or the needs that women with different body types face. Today, we’re going to tell you what to look for in a great running bra, so you can find the right bra for you even if it’s not one of our roundup quick-picks. Without further ado, here’s part 1 of everything you need to know to find the perfect running bra!

Why You Need a Good Running Bra
First of all, don’t underestimate the need for a good running bra. It doesn’t matter how small you are – you need a bra for running! For a woman, the bra is just as important as the shoes when it comes to avoiding injury.

Running without proper support can cause “jogger’s breast.” Repetitive side-to-side and up-and-down motion can cause injury to the Cooper’s ligament, which is the connective tissue that supports the breast. Stretching or tearing in the Cooper’s ligament is irreversible. Don’t do this to your lovely breasts!

Size Matters – It Really, Really Matters
With bra studies showing that up to 80 percent of women are wearing the wrong bra size, the single most important thing you can do to take care of your breasts and find a great running bra is to find out what your bra size actually is! You need to be fitted – preferably once a year, but definitely after any major changes to your body, such as weight loss or giving birth.

You don’t have to go to a store to be fitted. All you need is a soft measuring tape, and maybe the help of a friend if you want to make sure you’re getting it right. (I do most of my fittings by myself these days, but I feel confident in getting it right after I’ve been shown how by bra fit specialist Frederika Zappe. But I take my measurements EVERY TIME I buy a new bra to make sure my size hasn’t changed, and to ensure I get the right size based on the manufacturer’s sizing.)

Take a look at our bra fit guidelines. It takes less than 5 minutes to size yourself properly. Do it. Your breasts will thank you!

The Bra Band
The bra band should provide the majority of the support, which is why it’s so important for women to be wearing the right bra size. Most women wear a bra band that is too big, with cups that are too small. Make sure your sizing is right!

The best bra band for a running bra will be wide and comfortable. Microfiber and other moisture-wicking, breathable fabrics are great for comfort. If the bra band isn’t breathable, you may find yourself overheating, so look for a breathable band – particularly if you live in a warm climate and intend to run outdoors.
