Guess what, girlfriends! Yours truly has signed up for her first 5k at the end of October! I’ve been toying with the idea of running for fitness off and on for 6 or 7 years, but I never seem to get more than 4-6 weeks into a running program before something happens to derail me. This time, some friends and I have signed up for a 5k to keep us motivated and make sure we follow through! And of course, the first thing I had to do was decide whether my current sports bras are good enough for running. So for the rest of the week, we’re going to take a look at sports bras, and I’ll keep all of you updated periodically as I move through training and try the top sports bras myself!
5K Training and My Sports Bra Needs
I’m not exactly a fit person. Over the past 10 years, I’ve gained and lost and gained weight again. So I’m a very out-of-shape woman with a bra size of 40F – which means I’m definitely a bit intimidated by the process of whipping myself into shape for a 5K!
I’ve started the Couch-to-5k running program 4 times over the past 6 or 7 years – most recently in the spring of this year, as I committed to running a 5K with my friends this fall. Couch-to-5k is an interval training program, where each week you alternate walking and running until you can run longer and longer, and eventually you’re running for the entire workout – enough to run a 5k. I did stick with the program for 6 weeks on this most recent go-round, but then I went on vacation and then got sick with something that behaved suspiciously like West Nile Virus this fall, so it has now been about 6 weeks since I ran.
As I currently only have about 6.5 weeks to prep for my 5K, which is on October 28, I decided to re-start Couch-to-5k on Week 4. The idea is that I’ll finish the 8-week program with a week left before the 5k, so I’ll have an extra week of running 5k-length to get myself used to it and hopefully not embarrass myself too badly on my first 5k run!
Right now, my current sports bras are: the Elomi Energise Underwire Sports Bra 8040, and the Le Mystere Energie Sport Bra 320. I’ll start by running in each bra for a week, and then switch to different sport bras to see what works best over the course of my training. And I’ll post up my reviews here, so you can see what works for a kinda-out-of-shape woman in a real life training scenario! Over the rest of the week, we’ll be taking a look at different sport bras and which ones I’ll try for running.
Any of you want to train for a 5k with me? Couch-to-5k is a surprisingly easy running program to start training with – let’s not let this winter be another year where we pack on the pounds and then feel bad come spring!
