Being pregnant during the hottest part of summer can have its challenges – and one of those is knowing what to wear to the beach! If you’re a new mom-to-be, and you have questions about maternity swimwear or what’s the right swimwear to wear to the pool or beach, here are a few of the most common questions for today’s Friday Q&A:
Question from Alyssa B:
Would a tankini work as a maternity swimsuit? I am almost 4 months pregnant, so I need something that will work with my pregnancy but that I can use beyond pregnancy too. Would a tankini work? Or would the top be too short?
Congrats on your new baby, Alyssa!
The short answer is: the changes that your body will go through during your pregnancy are pretty unique. Most of our tankinis are not designed to be worn as maternity swimsuits, so your belly will show once you get big enough. We do have some maternity tankini swimsuits, though, which you would wear during your pregnancy and after.
If you buy a maternity swimsuit, though, there will be extra fabric in the tankini top after you deliver. But buying a maternity-specific tankini is the best way to get something you can use even after you deliver if it’s important to keep your belly covered, as a regular tankini won’t have enough fabric to fully cover the baby bump.
Question from Many Moms-to-be:
Is it ok for pregnant women to wear 2 piece swimsuits at the beach? Is it tacky to wear a bikini whilst pregnant?
This is such a common question that there seem to be a ton of moms asking it in their own unique ways. As it turns out, there are a lot of conflicting opinions about whether women should wear two-pieces while pregnant!
Ultimately, I believe you should wear whatever you’re comfortable wearing. If you’ll feel self-conscious in a bikini while pregnant, cover up! But if you want to show off the baby bump, creating new life is a beautiful thing and anyone who disagrees can just deal. It’s all about what makes you feel comfortable, happy and beautiful.
Anita does make a couple of maternity bikinis, and you can wear any bikini as a pregnant mom-to-be, as long as it provides enough support in the cups and is either low-rise so it’s below the baby bump, or has enough fabric to wrap around the baby bump.
Some people do feel that pregnant women should not show their bellies, but that’s not what the fashion industry believes. Celebrities from Kim Kardashian to Ashlee Simpson, Tori Spelling to Uma Thurman, and Nicole Richie to Britney Spears have all stepped out in bikinis whilst pregnant, proudly showing off their baby bumps. There are a ton of fashion shoots featuring pregnant moms in bikinis – it’s a thing. So if you want to wear a bikini to the beach, know that you’re in good company! Just make sure you wear enough sunscreen to protect your pregnant belly.
