Last year, we covered a controversial topic: are bras dangerous to your health? Rumors and questions about this issue seem to surface every so often, and it’s surprising how many women don’t know the answer to that question! So in honor of National Breast Cancer Awareness Month, we’re going to revisit the truth about dangerous bras, and whether bras can cause medical issues.
Do Bras Cause Breast Cancer?
One of the most common questions that comes up when women talk about the potential health risks of bras is whether or not bras can cause breast cancer. The answer is no! We’ve actually covered this a couple of different ways now, so for the full story, check out these articles:
Do Underwire Bras Cause Medical Issues?
Another common myth about bras is that underwire bras can cause health issues. In looking for myths for this article, I found an old article about the metal in underwires stimulating acupuncture points and causing women to get sick. No conventional medical science has ever found this to be the case.
The other concern about underwires is that they can “block the lymph glands from draining” and therefore potentially prevent toxins from being removed from the body. This is another speculation with no fact in medical science. This is another rumor circulated from the book “Dressed to Kill” – that has no basis in real medicine.
Can Bras Cause the Breasts to Sag?
A French study that came out this summer suggested that wearing bras could actually cause the breasts to sag prematurely. Media outlets have been running with this study, but if you look closer, you’ll find that the study is very incomplete and doesn’t represent a valid conclusion. The study only followed roughly 300 women, which is far too small of a sample size to be representative. Additionally, the study doesn’t take into account a variety of factors that could affect the results, so the conclusion is basically meaningless.
Poor Bra Fit Can Cause Medical Issues
The one thing that has a basis in truth when it comes to whether bras are dangerous or not is that poor bra fit can cause medical issues. Fit really is super important!
Women who wear poorly-fitted bras for a long time – bras that dig into the shoulders, for example – may actually find that their body’s tissue starts to deform around the bra. This isn’t something that happens overnight, though – it’s something that comes from years and decades of wearing a poorly-fitted bra.
Alternately, wearing a bra that doesn’t fit properly can cause everything from headaches, sore shoulders, backaches, neck problems and even breathing problems – particularly for women with fuller busts. You absolutely need your bra to fit you properly or it can cause more harm than good! Check out our fit guidelines to make sure you’re wearing a properly fitted bra.
Have you heard anything about bras being dangerous that we haven’t covered here? We want to know what other rumors are out there, and whether there’s any truth to them!
