Some women update their swimwear with every swim season. Other women hang onto that swimsuit forever – maybe because swimsuit shopping can be a hassle, or maybe because they just don’t want to spend the money on a new swimsuit. Unfortunately, hanging onto your swimsuit too long can cause some pretty embarrassing wardrobe malfunctions! How do you know when it’s finally time to buy a new swimsuit?
When Your Current Swimsuit Shows Visible Signs of Wear
When your current swimsuit starts showing visible signs of wear, it’s a good indicator that it’s time for a new swimsuit. This may include things like:
- Marks where your swimsuit has rubbed against a rough surface, such as sitting on a pool deck
Basically, if you can see signs of age, it’s time to update. This isn’t strictly a matter of vanity. If a swimsuit is visually showing wear, it’s only a matter of time before a serious failure will occur. That tiny tear could turn into a major rip. Those areas of stretching could become thin and see-through after a particularly vigorous swim. Chlorine speeds up the process from visible wear to serious damage, so it’s particularly important to update your swimsuit if you frequent chlorinated pools.
If you want to avoid a major wardrobe malfunction, replace that swimsuit when it starts showing signs of wear.
When You No Longer Get the Support You Need
If your swimsuit has a built-in bra, the bra part of the swimsuit may begin to fail before it shows visible signs of damage. This is frequently caused by stretching, but it can also be a result of damage to the underwire or changes to your body – or even very vigorous activities whilst wearing the swimsuit. When you’re not getting the support you need from your swimsuit anymore, it’s time to update!
When You Gain or Lose Weight
Our bodies go through a lot of changes over the course of our lifetimes. It’s not uncommon for women to gain or lose a significant amount of weight – due to medical issues, having a baby, emotional distress or even just a shift in priorities in a busy lifestyle. When you gain or lose weight, it’s time to update your swimsuit. Pouring yourself into a swimsuit that’s too small, or wearing a baggy swimsuit that’s way too big, isn’t doing you any favors – and it’s a great way to treat yourself to an embarrassing wardrobe malfunction!
Consider Separates for Ease of Updating
Wearing swimsuit separates makes it super easy to update your swimwear in a more economic manner. Some women find that their swimsuit tops wear out more quickly. Other women find themselves often sitting on rough surfaces, and quickly ruining a swimsuit bottom. When you wear swimsuit separates, you can easily update the top or bottom as needed to refresh your look and make sure your swimsuit won’t embarrass you!
What’s your personal criteria for updating? Do you have any great stories about waiting too long to update your swimsuit?
