Fit Challenges for Your Body Type

When most people refer to fit relative to body type, they’re talking about bust size. While bust size does play a role in fit, many women have specific fit challenges based on their body type. Size is only a small part of the equation. For example, a 40-year-old mother of three may wear the same size as a 20-year-old, but the fit for these women is going to be very different based on their unique body types. Do you have specific fit challenges based on your body type?

Broad Shoulders
Broad shoulders represent a unique fit challenge. When you’re shopping for bras, look for bra styles with wide-set straps, or adjustable straps that will be easy to get on and off over your shoulders. A front-clasp bra that you can slide into might be easier to put on and take off.

Narrow Shoulders
When you have narrow shoulders, your bra straps may slide off your shoulders and down your arms. Look for bras that have straps set close together, and try adjustable straps that you can tighten so they won’t fall off your shoulders. Keep in mind that it should be the body of the bra providing the support; not your bra straps. Convertible bras and racerback bras are good design choices to help prevent the straps from slipping.

Long Torso
If you’ve got a long torso, you may have a challenge finding swimwear, longline bras and other torso-dependent styles. You may also have a problem with needing longer bra straps. Look for bras with adjustable strap length so you can find the right fit on your torso. Some of our manufacturers also make long torso styles specifically for women with this challenge.

Short Torso
Women with a short torso face the challenge of finding a bra that will fit under the arms. Bras that have a high underwire may come up too high under the arm and dig into the armpit or fit uncomfortably if you’ve got a short torso. You may also find that full-coverage bras come up too high on your body, or the cups are too high. Cups that provide partial coverage are likely to look the best on this body type, and look for bras with underwires that don’t extend too high on the sides.

High Rib Cage
If you’ve got a high rib cage, you may find that you need to wear a larger band size than your body type warrants. A “thin” person with an average rib cage might wear a 30 or 32 band, while a woman with the same body type but a high rib cage might need a 34 or 36 band size. You may also have trouble with some underwire bras digging into your ribs, so see where the underwire fits and adjust your band accordingly for this body type.

Sagging or Drooping Breasts
Breasts can sag, stretch or droop for a variety of reasons. Motherhood, aging or just wearing the wrong bra size for too long can cause your breasts to sag or droop. When this happens, it’s vital to find a bra that offers good support. A full coverage bra might be the best choice for shaping, depending on the severity of the sagging or stretching.
