Runners around the world are showing solidarity in the best way they know – running. The Run for Boston movement has sprung up on Twitter and social media, and it’s a great way to show support for fellow runners, and to show the world that we won’t be intimidated by cowardly, senseless attacks like the one that devastated the Boston Marathon yesterday. I’m about to lace up my running shoes and head out myself, but if you find running uncomfortable – or are ready to use this as an opportunity to start a running program of your own – here’s our roundup of best sports bras for running!
1. Shock Absorber Level 4D Plus Max Sports Bra Top B4490
Last fall, I guinea-pigged a bunch of sports bras when I started a 5k running program. Far and away my favorite for my 40F bust is the Shock Absorber Level 4D Plus Max Sports Bra Top B4490. This bra can be tricky to get on (I had to have my hubby help me the first few times until I got the hang of it) but it provides firm support even for full breasts. It quickly became my go-to running bra, and it’s the sports bra I use any time I run a race. Be aware that the sizing isn’t quite the same as USA or European sizing – consult the sizing guide for help getting the right fit.
2. Enell Sports Bra
The Enell Sports Bra is Oprah’s favorite, and on my list it comes in a close second in running sports bras for big breasts. The front closure makes it easier to get on/off than the Shock Absorber bra above, and it provides pretty decent compression-based support. However, it’s not very breathable, so it can get pretty warm – I’d call this running sports bra best for spring and fall, and air-conditioned workouts in the gym.
3. Champion Powerback Underwire Sports Bra 1694
Champion makes a lot of well-respected sports bras that get a lot of buzz in the running community, and if you’ve got a smaller bust, our favorite sports bra for running is the Champion Powerback Underwire Sports Bra 1694. Criss-cross racerback design ensures the bra straps won’t fall off your shoulders, and it provides firm support without compressing your bust too much, giving you some shaping if you want to wear it for errands or weekends – it’s a great “do everything” sports bra. It comes in smaller cup sizes, though – I’d call this best for a C cup, although D and DD can wear it, too.
4. Elomi Energise Underwire Sports Bra 8040
The Elomi Energise Underwire Sports Bra 8040 is an excellent sports bra for fuller-figured or full-busted women who have had trouble getting good support with their sports bras. It’s not quite as effective as the other bras on this list when it comes to running, but in my opinion it’s the next best thing to the Shock Absorber for women with fuller breasts. It’s more comfortable than the Shock Absorber, and is great for wearing around casually because it offers good shaping – it doesn’t compress the bust nearly as much as a typical sports bra.
Join me in lacing up your running shoes and showing your support by going for a run! Now’s the perfect time to start a new running program – I love Couch-to-5k if you’ve never been a runner before – and it’s also the perfect time to get into spring training mode.
