The quest for the ultimate running sports bra continues! This week, I test drove my Elomi Energise Underwire Sports Bra 8040. To be fair, I’ve had this bra for a few years now, and I adore it, so I’ve had more time to form my perceptions of this bra. I’m going to approach this review a little differently because of the length of time I’ve spent with this sports bra, but I’ll still be judging it for its overall ability to contain me comfortably while running.
The Elomi Energise Underwire Sports Bra 8040: First Impressions
I first tried on this bra when I had an interview and fit session with Frederika Zappe, fit specialist for Eveden, the parent company of Elomi, Freya, Fantasie, Goddess – some absolutely great lingerie brands. With her help, I was able to find the right bra type and style for my body. I’ve got a short torso, so bras with wide bands and tall underwires tend to be no-nos for me.
The Elomi Energise Underwire Sports Bra 8040 was an instant hit – it fit well, I felt contained and supported, and the fabric was breathable and comfortable. I had also been wearing the wrong bra size up to that point – my bra band was too big and the cups were too small – so it felt a little tight at first because I wasn’t used to a bra that fit properly. It didn’t take me long to fall in love, though, and this bra has stayed in my sport bra rotation all this time because it ROCKS.
This is an encapsulation-style sports bra with a multi-part cup, so it contains your breasts and provides shaping and support without squishing you. The fabric is great – it’s lightweight and breathable, and it stands up very well to hot weather. It’s also the fastest-drying bra I’ve ever owned! The bra is comfortable and I think it’s great for casual wear – it’s a wonderful weekend bra in addition to being a great addition to my sports bra wardrobe.
How Does it Hold Up to Running?
Truth time: while I absolutely love this bra, I just don’t feel like it holds my breasts as securely in place as other sports bras promise to do. Specialists have studied how the breasts move while running, and breasts actually do some side-to-side and in-and-out motions while running, not just up-and-down. These studies have shown that the breasts actually tend to do sort of a sideways figure eight while running.
While the Elomi Energise Underwire Sports Bra 8040 did a heck of a lot better than a regular bra would do, I didn’t feel as secure as I wanted to feel. I still felt some movement. It wasn’t like the girls were coming up to punch me in the face, but I was’t contained, and fighting that motion actually made me feel more fatigued while running, too.
Overall: this bra is a great sports bra, and it keeps me comfortable while I work out and cool on a hot day, but I don’t think it’s going to be my top pick for running.
