This week, the awesome email newsletters here at Big Girls Bras are delving into a somewhat controversial topic: dangerous bras. Today’s email newsletter looked at the claims that wearing a bra can cause breast cancer. Periodically, people revisit a book called “Dressed to Kill” that explores a supposed link between wearing a bra and breast cancer. We’ve taken an in-depth look at the book and these articles, and today we’re going to talk about the myths and truths about your breast health.
Can Wearing a Bra Cause Breast Cancer?
Short answer: no way! We wrote an in-depth article exploring the book “Dressed to Kill” – and the authors who wrote it. If you want the full story about the book, the authors and the “Harvard Study” that articles about bras and breast cancer cite, take a look at the full article. But the long and the short of it is that the couple that wrote the book doesn’t have an appropriate medical background that supports the conclusions they draw, and the American Cancer Society, the National Cancer Institute and the U.S. National Institute of Health all say that “there are no scientifically-valid studies that show that wearing bras causes breast cancer.” Period.
What About Other Breast Cancer Causes?
Breasts are important to us here at Big Girls Bras! You might say that breasts are our business! And the women who work here are certainly concerned about breast health. So we’ve researched the other commonly cited “causes of breast cancer” and have found that most of the causes of breast cancer are just myths. This article that we wrote last year explores in-depth the myths surrounding the causes of breast cancer. If you have questions about what can cause breast cancer, check it out!
Be Informed and Educated
The best thing you can do to ensure you keep yourself in good health is to be informed and educated about breast health. In May, we wrote an article about the bra becoming a symbol for women’s health issues. The sad reality is that many women are not educated about women’s health issues, and things like mammograms and pap smears are dreaded and avoided by women around the country – when they should be embraced as ways to monitor and detect changes to our health. Check out this article on being aware, and do yourself the favor of educating yourself about these important women’s health issues.
Bra Fit CAN Cause Medical Problems
While it’s a myth that wearing a bra can cause breast cancer, poor bra fit can cause some medical issues. We’ve written a ton of articles about bra fit and the medical problems that can come from wearing bad bras; this one is a good starting point. Peruse our fit guidelines and make sure you’re wearing a properly-fitted bra to avoid the medical problems that can come from poor fit – and you’ll find yourself feeling so much more comfortable in a well-fitted bra, too!
