As the number of women who are diagnosed with breast cancer grows, so does the prosthetic options for women who have undergone mastectomies. The Frederick News-Post in Maryland reported today that a nurse specializing in obstetrics and gynecology has gone on to create a new scanner to help fit breast cancer patients for new prosthetics. Her scanner represents a huge leap forward for women who have suffered through breast cancer, and makes life post-mastectomy a lot easier. If you’ve recently undergone a mastectomy, or know anyone who has been diagnosed with breast cancer, this is a bit of technology you’ll want to pay attention to.
Scanner Makes Fitting Prosthetics Easier
The scanner that Wendy Carter has helped create is designed to make the fitting process easier for women who want to use prosthetics. Utilizing current techniques, women who want custom prosthetics have to sit (stand, really) through a two-and-a-half hour fitting, which can cause a lot of discomfort for women who have recently undergone chemotherapy or radiation treatment for cancer. There’s also the mental barrier for women to overcome; disrobing in front of a stranger and submitting to a seemingly-endless series of measurements after having undergone a mastectomy.
Carter’s scanner takes images of the breast wall and the remaining tissue from a variety of angles. The entire process only takes a few minutes, and the results are as good as a prosthetic designed using the traditional fitting process. The scanner creates 4D computerized images, the fitting takes almost no time and is much more comfortable. Carter then works with artisans to create custom prosthetics, which women can wear in three ways: under a regular bra, in a pocketed post-mastectomy bra, or using medical-grade adhesive to attach it to your body for things like swimming or wearing under a tank top.
