Everyone loves a good makeover show, and there’s no doubt that a change in look can have a huge impact on a person’s life. Makeovers help you feel more confident, and unlock the potential that you haven’t dared to tap into! Most of us never have the opportunity to undergo anything so dramatic, but there *is* a makeover that you can give yourself – a bra makeover! And just like any other makeover, a bra makeover can change your life!

Look Slimmer
One of the biggest benefits of a bra makeover – that most women never think of, or we’d all rush out to do it immediately – is to look slimmer! Professionals estimate that up to 80% of women wear the wrong bra size, and it can have huge consequences on the way you look. When your breasts aren’t supported properly, your body can appear to be out-of-proportion. Transform yourself with a bra makeover, and you can look slimmer without having to lose any weight or resort to diet pills or other extreme measures! Depending on your body type, you may look 5 to 10 pounds slimmer just by changing your bra. Who wouldn’t love an instant tummy-tuck?

Enjoy a Flattering Silhouette
In addition to looking slimmer, a bra makeover can change the way your clothes fit, giving you a beautiful and flattering silhouette. When you’re wearing the wrong bra size, your breasts often suffer for it – sagging or appearing shapeless, and hanging lower than they ought to. When you give yourself a bra makeover, the right bra in the right size can lift your breasts, give your bust a beautiful, rounded shape and change the way your clothes hang on your body! With your boobs in their proper place, your shirts are more likely to skim over your stomach and create natural curves. You’ll love the way you look – and your clothes fit – in the right bra!

Reap the Medical Benefits of Good Bra Fit
A bra makeover isn’t all about vanity. You can actually gain medical benefits from a bra makeover. If you’ve got a full bust, you know how uncomfortable life can be. Bras often feel tight, or pinch, or have straps that dig into your shoulders. Alternately, you may experience shoulder pain, back pain, neck pain or headaches because of the weight of your bust. When you wear a properly fitted, supportive bra – those pain points are eliminated! A bra makeover can make your pain and discomfort vanish completely, as well as make it easier to breathe and lead an active lifestyle.

How to Give Yourself a Bra Makeover
The two biggest issues with women’s bras are bra fit, and wearing the wrong type of bra for your body. Fit is the most critical issue. It’s absolutely essential to fit yourself properly for a bra – don’t just keep blindly buying a certain bra size because it’s what you’ve always bought! Visit our bra fit pages for everything you need to know about finding the right fit.

Yesterday, we started showing you what you need to know to find the perfect running bra! Today, we’ll wrap up our running bra shopping guide with a few more practical considerations, and some examples.

Bra Cups
This is where running bras vary widely. Some sports bras work by compression, which means they squish your boobs to try to hold them in place. Others work with encapsulation, which means they have regular bra cups like any other bra, and they’re designed to hold you in place without squishing.

In my experience, the best bras for running are combination bras, which use both compression and encapsulation. Compression alone can cause your entire bust to move every time you take a step, and encapsulation alone tends not to provide the support I demand – combination sports bras are the best of both worlds. But you may find that one or the other works better for you – don’t be afraid to experiment!

If you’ve got a full bust, underwire sports bras provide extra support. My two favorite sports bras are wire-free, but the bands are very snug, so I don’t get any extra comfort by going wire-free. My third and fourth favorite running bras have wires – I don’t find the wires at all uncomfortable. Encapsulation-style sports bras are more likely to have wires, while compression-style sports bras are more likely to be wire-free – so this factor depends largely on the style you choose.

Other things to look at in bra cups: multi-part cups tend to provide more support for running. Molded cups are great under a t-shirt for shaping, but they aren’t great at providing control for the up-down and side-to-side motion of running. I’ve got the Le Mystere Energie Sport Bra 320, and the band is a good size so it provides good support, but the molded cups just don’t hold me in place the same way my other running bras do. It’s the last bra I reach for when I run – I only wear it running when all my other running bras are in the laundry! It does look great under a t-shirt, though!

Finally, moisture-wicking and breathability are important in bra cups, too. Padded bra cups may seem like a good idea to protect your modesty, but they can get hot real fast! Look for a bra whose cups retain their shaping and support even when moist, and if you run in a hot climate, breathability becomes a big factor. I only wear my Enell Sports Bra to run if the temperature is ~65 or under because the fabric isn’t breathable. Something with breathable mesh panels or a breathable center gore can really help with the warm-weather running.

Bra Straps
Oh, the dreaded bra straps! You want to make sure your running bra straps stay in place while you run. I hate having to constantly pull up my bra straps when I’m running, and if straps are slipping, you may not be getting enough support, either. Racerback style bras are great for women who have narrow or sloped shoulders, and for whom the bra straps are prone to slippage. Women with wider shoulders or women who typically don’t find themselves having trouble with bra straps can wear pretty much whatever they want, as long as the straps are adjustable and can be appropriately tightened.

The straps should only support 10 to 20 percent of the weight of your bust, but they are important in helping prevent bounce and side-to-side motion, so look for something with wide, competent straps to ensure you’re getting the best support.

Now you know everything you need to know to shop for a running bra! Check out reviews and see what our other shoppers have to say – and good luck finding the perfect running sports bra for you!

Yesterday’s running bra roundup is a good general starting point, but it doesn’t encompass all of our fabulous running bras – or the needs that women with different body types face. Today, we’re going to tell you what to look for in a great running bra, so you can find the right bra for you even if it’s not one of our roundup quick-picks. Without further ado, here’s part 1 of everything you need to know to find the perfect running bra!

Why You Need a Good Running Bra
First of all, don’t underestimate the need for a good running bra. It doesn’t matter how small you are – you need a bra for running! For a woman, the bra is just as important as the shoes when it comes to avoiding injury.

Running without proper support can cause “jogger’s breast.” Repetitive side-to-side and up-and-down motion can cause injury to the Cooper’s ligament, which is the connective tissue that supports the breast. Stretching or tearing in the Cooper’s ligament is irreversible. Don’t do this to your lovely breasts!

Size Matters – It Really, Really Matters
With bra studies showing that up to 80 percent of women are wearing the wrong bra size, the single most important thing you can do to take care of your breasts and find a great running bra is to find out what your bra size actually is! You need to be fitted – preferably once a year, but definitely after any major changes to your body, such as weight loss or giving birth.

You don’t have to go to a store to be fitted. All you need is a soft measuring tape, and maybe the help of a friend if you want to make sure you’re getting it right. (I do most of my fittings by myself these days, but I feel confident in getting it right after I’ve been shown how by bra fit specialist Frederika Zappe. But I take my measurements EVERY TIME I buy a new bra to make sure my size hasn’t changed, and to ensure I get the right size based on the manufacturer’s sizing.)

Take a look at our bra fit guidelines. It takes less than 5 minutes to size yourself properly. Do it. Your breasts will thank you!

The Bra Band
The bra band should provide the majority of the support, which is why it’s so important for women to be wearing the right bra size. Most women wear a bra band that is too big, with cups that are too small. Make sure your sizing is right!

The best bra band for a running bra will be wide and comfortable. Microfiber and other moisture-wicking, breathable fabrics are great for comfort. If the bra band isn’t breathable, you may find yourself overheating, so look for a breathable band – particularly if you live in a warm climate and intend to run outdoors.

Join us tomorrow for Part 2, where we’ll look at bra cups and bra straps!

If you’re working hard and losing weight, you may notice that your bras no longer fit quite right. Maybe it’s time to treat yourself to some new clothes now that you’ve dropped a few sizes – including some new bras! Don’t fall into the most common bra fit trap when losing weight: a D is not a D across the board, so when you lose weight, you may find your bra cup size changing!

Cup Sizes are Not Universal
Most women don’t realize it, but bra cup sizes are not the same across all the band sizes. A 32D, for example, isn’t the same cup size as a 38D. Bra manufacturers scale their cup sizes according to the band size, so a 38D, in proportion, is actually bigger than a 32D if you’re just comparing cup volume. This means that if you’re losing weight or changing bra sizes, you may not just need to change your band size – it may mean you need to change your cup size!

Common Weight-Loss Bra Size Scenarios
Surprisingly, there haven’t been a lot of studies about this, so we only have anecdotal evidence to go on to figure out what’s “common” when women lose weight. It seems like the most common change to bra size when women lose weight is that the band size goes down, but the cup size actually goes up! This means that while you might have been a 38D, when you go down to a 34, you may actually be an E or an F. This is because the volume of the cup scales down as the band size scales down, and women seem to lose inches around their rib cage faster than they lose volume in the breasts. So your breasts may have the same volume as when you were a 38D, but in a size 34 band, you may actually need an E or an F cup to get the same volume.

If you lose a lot of weight, you may go down in relative cup size, too. You do lose weight in your breasts as you lose weight all over your body, but women don’t always lose weight at the same rate in the same places, so there’s no uniform rule for how that works. So instead of going down to a 34F, if you drop all the way down to a 32 from a 40 or 42, you may still be a D – because you may have lost enough volume in your breasts to scale your cup size – i.e. you may not gain in cup size as you go down if you’ve had a big weight loss.

Check Your Fit as You Lose Weight
The ultimate lesson from all these variables is that you need to re-check your bra fit after you lose weight to make sure you’re buying the right bra size. Don’t just assume you’ll stay the same cup size in a smaller band – chances are good that you won’t! Follow our fit guidelines to measure yourself and determine the appropriate bra size, and don’t forget to check our bra cup size comparison to select the appropriate cup and band size based on the brand you’re buying!

(And congrats on losing weight and going down in size!)

We recently asked our fans and shoppers for their top tips and tricks for bra and swimsuit shopping, and one universal truth arose: a lot of women HATE swimsuit shopping because it’s practically impossible to find something that fits! Do you find yourself leaving stores in a huff because nothing fit? Or practically breaking into tears in the dressing room because everything you try on seems to make you look and feel as unflattering as possible? It turns out, you’re not alone! Plenty of other women have similar shopping experiences. Try checking your stress at the door this swimsuit shopping season with these great tips!

1. Check Your Size
Did you know that something like 80% of women are wearing the wrong bra size? Maybe you’re having a hard time finding swimsuits that fit properly because you’re going on an outdated notion of what your size actually is! We’ve recently redesigned our bra fit guidelines to help make it easier than ever to figure out what size you need. Stop guessing, and shop for a bra size swimsuit that will actually fit your body! Even if you think you know your size, measure yourself and take a look at our fit guidelines to see if you need to make a size adjustment.

2. Browse By Size
Here at Big Girls Bras, we want to make it super easy for you to find the size you’re looking for. When you’re browsing our swimsuits, you can actually use the left nav bar to browse by size! Click on “Shop by Bra Size” or “Shop by Size” to select your size. Then you’ll only see swimsuits that come in your size, so you won’t have to wade through endless options only to find that they don’t come in your size!

(Also, quick tip from experience: if you find that you’re different sizes on top and bottom, two-piece swimsuit separates are a lifesaver! Get the size you need on top, and size the bottom separately! This doesn’t just work for bikinis; you can get some great tankini swimsuit styles that offer the coverage of a one-piece swimsuit but the perfect fit of something tailored just for your body!)

3. Look for Fits that will Flatter Your Body
This one is slightly more difficult, because it’s a bit more subjective, but: look for swimsuit fits that will flatter your body! Different brands fit in different ways, even with the same sizing, so try different brands until you find a fit that flatters your body. Be realistic about your body shape and what styles will look best on you, and focus on those styles. If you need help figuring it out, check out our Fitting and Sizing blog posts for tips, or sign up to get our Awesome Emails and get our free “Hard-to-Fit No More!” guide that will help you find styles to fit and flatter your body type!

4. Try Not to Take it Personally or Dwell on the Negative!
Finally, we all get frustrated when we try on swimsuits that we love on the hanger, but just don’t look right when we put them on. Try not to take it personally or dwell on the negative! Our bodies are all different, and what the designer had in mind when he or she created a particular style or fit might be perfect for someone else, but may not work as well for you. So just keep looking until you find the swimsuit designed for your body, and don’t take it to heart. Just because a swimsuit you love doesn’t really work for you doesn’t mean the perfect swimsuit isn’t out there! Keep trying, and try to enjoy the shopping experience – think of it as an adventure instead of letting it stress you out!

One of the biggest problems that we women face when it comes to bra shopping is finding one that fits properly. In physical stores, where you can try bras on, it’s a big problem because there tends to be limited selection. It’s even harder online when you have to order a bra without trying it. We here at Big Girls Bras totally understand your fit concerns, so we’ve put a lot of time and effort into re-designing our bra fit guides to be easier to use and give you the confidence and info you need to find bras that fit!

We’ve got a ton of new images to make it easier to measure and tell if a bra fits properly, and we’ve re-organized everything to make it easier for you to find what you’re looking for. So check out our new bra fit guides and shop with confidence!

For Starters
Not sure where to start? Check out our “For Starters” page, which gives you a bunch of options to find exactly what you want. Use it to drill down to the pages you want, or take some time to browse all of the pages to learn exactly why your bras never seem to fit properly! Our new guide demystifies the entire process with well-written, easy-to-follow instructions, and gives you great images that show you exactly where most fit problems occur, and what to do – and what not to do – in the world of bra fit.

Is Your Current Bra a Good Fit?
We highly recommend that every woman check out the “Is Your Current Bra a Good Fit?” page. With statistics like “85% of women are wearing the wrong bra size” – most of us have no idea how a bra should actually fit! We inherit our ideas of bra fit from our mothers, many of whom have never been professionally fitted by women who know what they’re doing, or we have a fitting once in a department store, where they try to cram us into a bra size they carry so they can make a sale – whether or not it’s a good fit. And that’s how we think a bra should fit forever more!

No more. Take a look at our new “Is Your Current Bra a Good Fit?” page, and you’ll understand the common fit problems. From there, check out “What a Well-Fitted Bra Should Feel Like” to see the difference and really understand bra fit, or maybe “How a Bra Should Fit” for a refresher on how the bra should look and feel when you wear it.

How Bra Sizing Works and Getting Measured
If you’re like most of us, you know your arbitrary number and letter size designation (which may or may not be accurate) but you have no idea how bra sizing actually works. To give you a better understanding of sizing, we’ve put together the “How Bra Sizing Works” page with a lot of good info to help you understand sizing. And if all of this fit talk has made you realize you’re one of the 85% of women who are wearing the wrong bra size, visit our “Getting Measured for a Bra” page to find out what you should be wearing!

What do you think – do you love our new bra fit guide as much as I do, or do you still have some questions about fit and bra sizing?

How many times have you picked up a fabulous swimsuit that fit perfectly everywhere – but in the bust? For those of us with fuller breasts, it’s really hard to find swimsuits that fit! Happily, swimwear designers have heard our complaints, and they now make an array of bra sized swimsuits designed to fit your bust – and your body. How do you shop for a bra size swimsuit?

Make Sure Your Measurements are Correct
The most important element of shopping for a bra size swimsuit is to have correct measurements! If your measurements are incorrect, even the best bra sized swimwear won’t fit properly. Take a moment to measure yourself before you start shopping – it’ll save you a major headache when you return swimsuit after swimsuit because none of them fit! We’ve made it easy for you – just follow our Step by Step Measuring Instructions to get (and double-check!) your measurements and figure out your correct bra size.

Consult Our Size Chart
We’ve got a couple of useful charts that can help you translate your measurements to bra size. First, check out our Bra Size Measuring Cross Reference Chart, and use your measurements to determine your cup and band size. This is the U.S. Standard bra size chart – European designers go on slightly different sizing, so the next step is to look at our Guide to Cup Sizes by Brand. Yes, our bra sized swimwear brands are listed there, too! An F cup size in Aerin Rose is the equivalent of an E cup in Swim Systems and Sunsets Separates, so it’s important to check the size chart by brand even if you’re confident that your measurements are correct and you know your size!

Use Our Handy Shop by Bra Size Option!
Our handy drop-down box on the left size of our product pages makes it easy to shop for items by wire type, type, brand – and you guessed it – bra size! Use our Bra Size filter to select your bra size, and you’ll see only the swimsuits that come in your bra size! You can also narrow it down by other preferences if you find yourself spoiled for choice.

Check Out the Reviews for Any Sizing Weirdness
Some of the best resources for finding the perfect fit are our other shoppers! Check out their reviews to see whether there are any sizing quirks or weirdness for a particular swimsuit. For example, one of our bestselling classics – the Fantasie of England Bahamas One-Piece Underwire Swimsuit 8009 pictured up top – has over 30 reviews, and our shoppers regularly comment on the great fit and the true-to-size (chart – remember, Fantasie is European so it’s not standard U.S. bra size). That lets you know that if you’ve measured yourself properly and checked the Fantasie brand size chart, you should have a perfect fit! Our shoppers also tend to comment when something runs large or small in the bust, so you can adjust accordingly.

Contact Us with Questions!
Remember: we’re here for you! Contact us on Facebook, give us a call or send us an email if you have any questions about bra fit or finding a bra-sized swimsuit. We want to help you look absolutely fabulous for the upcoming swim season!

As shapewear becomes more popular in a society obsessed with looking good, the risk of getting into health problems with shapewear has increased. Did you know your shapewear can be dangerous? Believe it or not, doctors are weighing in and there are real health risks associated with wearing shapewear. The risks are largely associated with poor fit, lack of circulation and too much restriction, and you can mitigate these risks by wearing appropriately-fitting shapewear. But what do you need to know to wear your shapewear safely and look smooth and trim in your clothes?

Acid Reflux, Heart Burn and Other Discomfort
The most common health problem associated with shapewear is acid reflux and heartburn. This is caused by women wearing shapewear that fits too tightly over the midsection.

To avoid acid reflux, heart burn and other discomfort, choose shapewear styles that aren’t too tight around your midsection. Consult our fit guidelines for help, and if you can’t breathe, sit and eat comfortably in your shapewear – it’s probably too tight.

Blood Clots
Yes, you read right – shapewear can cause blood clots! The covered elastic bands that hold the shapewear in place on your legs can actually lead to disruption of blood flow if they’re too tight. You should be particularly careful with elastic bands around the thighs and lower legs, as these are the areas where you’re most likely to form a blood clot through this issue. If a blood clot does form, it can move to other parts of your body and cause serious problems.

You know your shapewear is too tight in this area if they leave heavy marks or lines behind when you take it off. This is a sign you should look for a larger size or a different brand or fit of shapewear.

Nerve Damage and Circulatory Issues
Some women actually experience nerve damage and circulatory issues after doubling up their shapewear. Some celebrities have endorsed “layering” shapewear as a way to get more control and look great on the red carpet. Doctors advise against this, as too much restriction caused by layering shapewear can cause nerve damage and circulatory issues.

Fit is the Key for Avoiding Health Issues in Your Shapewear
The biggest way to avoid health issues with your shapewear is to ensure that it fits properly. Don’t go down a size looking for extra control and support. This can cause ALL of the issues outlined above. Always buy the correct size – they’re specifically designed for the size to help you look great and stay healthy. If you have questions about fit, consult our shapewear fit guidelines.

Remember: shapewear isn’t a magic bullet to help you go down two sizes. Some shapewear can help you reduce your measurement by one to two inches, but most shapewear simply helps contain trouble spots and help you look more trim and firm. Trying to downsize your shapewear in an effort to fit into smaller clothes just leads to potential health hazards – don’t do it!

This week, we’ve been looking at the challenges of fitting reconstructed breasts after breast cancer. Women who undergo breast reconstruction face a wide range of challenges, and often have a difficult time finding well-fitted bras after reconstruction is complete. Yesterday we looked at some of the best types of bras for reconstructed breasts, and today we’re going to look at some of our top bra recommendations for women who have undergone breast reconstruction!

Our Favorite Freya Bras that Look – and Fit – Great Post-Reconstruction!

Freya is a brand that’s highly favored by women who have undergone breast reconstruction. Freya is great because their underwires fully encapsulate the breast, and can help prevent lateral movement. These bras also feature a natural, rounded cup that won’t look awkward with reconstructed breasts.

One of the top recommendations among breast cancer survivors is the Freya Pollyanna bra! The Freya Pollyanna Balcony Bra AA5922 features nice, wide cups that fit a reconstructed breast better than many other bras, and feminine sheer cup tops and lacy finish to make you feel truly fabulous. Pollyanna also comes in a soft cup version if you’re looking for something wire-free.

Another top pick is the Freya Arabelle Underwire Plunge Bra AA5721, and its companion the balcony style version in AA5731. This bra features sheer cups to give you an alluring style, but also the nice rounded cups and stay-put underwire that reconstructed breasts need.

Fabulous Fantasie Bras for Reconstructed Breasts

This week, we’re taking a look at the challenges that breast cancer survivors face, bra-wise. It can be tough for women who survive breast cancer to feel good about their bodies again. Breast cancer can feel almost like a betrayal by your body, and a mastectomy can make you feel like you’ve lost your feminine self, and you may never feel pretty again. One way that many women combat that is through breast reconstruction surgery, but that can present its own fit challenges. Yesterday, we looked at those challenges – and today, we’re going to look at the types of bras that are best for women who have undergone breast reconstruction.

What Does Your PS Say?
Some plastic surgeons (PSs) have very firm recommendations about what type of bra to wear after breast reconstruction surgery. Others seem to have no opinion at all. And when the PS does have an opinion, sometimes it’s a complete contradiction from the next PSs opinion! So how are you supposed to know what’s best?

First and foremost, when you’re shopping for a new bra post-surgery, listen to your PSs recommendations. Every woman’s reconstruction is different. You may have medical considerations that cause the PS to recommend a specific type of bra for you – that might not necessarily be the same as his recommendation to the next person. So you should always take your PS under advisement, even if you’re hearing something else from your friends, from a support group or from some other source.

Soft Cup Bras
Many women who undergo breast reconstruction surgery prefer soft cup bras for their new breasts. A big problem that women face after reconstruction is wider, flatter breasts. Soft cup bras can be very forgiving in terms of size and shape – you won’t have to worry as much about a D cup gapping because your breast tissue doesn’t protrude as far, and the lack of underwire means the cups can conform more easily to your wider breasts. Additionally, some PSs swear by soft cup bras because they can be more comfortable, and won’t interfere with the new breast tissue or implants.

Underwire Bras
On the flip side, some plastic surgeons absolutely swear by underwire bras after breast reconstruction surgery. You may have an underwire bra recommended because a tightly-fitted, well-constructed underwire bra can help prevent breast implants from migrating toward the armpits. When selecting an underwire bra, look for one with an appropriately sized center gore – an underwire bra with the center gore too wide and the underwires pressing from the inside of your breasts can also cause the implants to want to move. It’s important to make sure the wire fits properly around your breast tissue – not lying against it – to prevent any complications with your new breasts.

Molded Cup or Padded Bras
Molded cup or padded bras can help with shaping, but it can be a double-edged sword – the end of a molded cup can dent or lose shape if you’re not fully filling the cup. If you want this type of bra, take some time to shop around for a shallower cup – avoid anything that looks too pointy. A minimizer bra can help, as these types of bras are designed to compress the breasts – so they tend to redistribute the breast tissue in a wider pattern tighter against the chest wall. This closely mimics breast tissue post-reconstruction, so this can be the perfect way to fit a molded cup bra after surgery.

Join us tomorrow as we show you some specific bra recommendations to help you feel feminine and look fabulous!
